Got a kick out of this, posted in my 8th grade cooperating teacher's math class:

  1. I've seen this before, and I also think that it's really funny. However, the message of this poster is sadly accurate; many kids don't understand the link between a story problem and how to solve it. My dyad teacher has a list of key words to look for in story problems and what they mean (ex. Less than means minus), but I still see lost students who are just trying to memorize these words rather than use logic. What are other ways we can teach effective and clear strategies for solving word problems so that student CAN see clear ways to find solutions and if those solutions make sense?
